Cleanliness is very important in litter box management. Good litter box hygiene can improve marking and abnormal urination behavior. The litter box must be cleaned daily and the contents emptied once a week with soap and water (no strong-smelling disinfectants). Although plastic liners are good for cleaning, some cats may not like them. As for the type of litter, cats prefer unscented, finer material and clumping litter to coarse, non-clumping litter. Strong odors often cause cats to resent the litter. See table for litter box management details.
In one study, the use of odorous litter increased the incidence of abnormal urination. Recent studies have shown that the use of Zero Odor in clumping litter can reduce the incidence of abnormal urination. For a specific cat, put different litters in the same two litters and let the cat choose which litter to use. If it is necessary to change to another type of litter, it is best to change it gradually, like changing food, as direct change can cause a significant number of cats to stop using the litter box and start abnormal urination.
(Table) Basic principles of sandpit management
Appropriate size, shape and placement of the litter box can reduce the incidence of abnormal urination. A covered litter box is not conducive to odor dispersion in the litter box and most cats do not like it because they cannot observe their surroundings at all times when urinating. However, as long as a cat uses a covered litter box, you cannot remove all the covers directly. Instead, put an uncovered litter box next to it and see which one the cat prefers. If the cat no longer uses the covered sandbox, it can be removed. A large sandbox with an open top allows the cat enough space to do circles, digging and burying before and after urination. This is also achieved by first placing a new one next to it and then slowly removing the old one. The hair on the soles of the cat’s feet, tail and perineum should also be treated regularly, otherwise cat sand and feces stuck to the hair will cause the cat to be averse to the sandbox.
Since cats often tend to consistently go to the same place where they previously urinated, it may be related to repeated marking or using the area as a toilet, or it may be a strong preference for the substrate. Proper cleaning is a must. Although a variety of pet excrement cleaning products exist, research has shown that enzyme-based cleaners are more effective in reducing the emission of urine odors. If the problem has persisted, the item (clothing, comforter or otherwise) needs to be thrown away to completely remove the odor. Then control the cat from urinating in the area again, which can be done by covering it with plastic or gold foil. When the cat walks on the plastic or gold foil, it will create a bad feeling and thus stop going to urinate. Alternatively a strong floral or citrus scent that the cat does not like can be sprayed on the area. If this is due to the cat’s preference for this substrate, improving the substrate (or cat litter) in the litter box is a must. This is often limited by human imagination and creativity.
Some commonly used methods include.
(1) Place disposable diapers in the bottom of the sandbox to attract the cat to the soft, plush feeling substrate.
(2) For cats that like to pee on the carpet, put a carpet of the same material in the bottom of the sand pot, or even use double-sided tape to stick the carpet in the sand pot
(3) For cats that prefer to urinate on smooth surfaces, no cat litter can be placed in the litter box. Sometimes, despite this, the cat still repeatedly goes to the place to urinate, this may be because it likes the location, consider putting a sand pot in the place and then remove it chronically. If the abnormal urination is confined to one room, consider closing the door so that the cat cannot enter.
In addition, for male cats in heat to urinate everywhere, it is recommended to cage and reduce the range of their activities to stop this behavior.
Otherwise, the pungent smell of urine that can be found everywhere in your home will make you very unbearable Oh ~
