Dental care is as important to your dog’s health as it is to your own. You should provide your dog with regular dental care and cleaning. The first thing you can do is train your dog to accept the habit of brushing. Start by gently brushing your pet’s gums with your finger. Initially rub the outside only, but as your pet gets used to the behavior, open his mouth to rub the inside gums at the same time.
When your dog gets used to it, you can put your finger around the gauze to brush his gums. Follow with some toothpaste made for dogs, not human. After a few weeks, your dog will be happy with a pet toothbrush with soft bristles made of synthetic fibers. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle between the teeth and gums and rotate it in thin circles over the teeth. Brush up and down to remove any tartar from the teeth. Repeat until the surface of the tooth is clean. Brushing the inside of the teeth is more difficult because your dog will resist opening his mouth wide, but you should always be able to brush both the inside and outside surfaces of the teeth. Brush your dog’s teeth twice a week for cleanliness.
