The Whippet is a relatively small English Springer Spaniel that was bred in the late 1800’s from a cross between a Springer Spaniel, an Italian Springer Spaniel and a Civet. This dog is one of the fastest short-distance runners in the world, hence its name “Whipit”, which means “fast”. Because of its speed, it is used as a running dog for competitions. Because this activity is often prevalent among the middle and lower classes, the dog is called the “poor man’s racehorse”. In addition, the Whippet has excellent hunting skills for rabbits, so people praise it quite a lot.
Some people call it the “fast dog” because of its sudden increase in speed when chasing rabbits. It was also honored as the “Dog of the Bite” or the “Bite Dog of the Chase” because of its ability to leap quickly and bite a running hare. The dog was introduced to the United States, Germany and Switzerland, where it became popular and was used in racing.
