Snapping turtles are not allowed to be kept in areas of the United States that do not have a natural distribution. Even if someone has one, they will give it up halfway if they think it is too fierce and abandon it in some water. And because of the abundance of food and the temporary absence of natural predators. Such a practice can pose a threat to the local species being released. Therefore, it is not possible to release them! So how do we keep it properly?
①About feeding
In early spring and early winter, snapping turtles are fed once a day, at noon when the temperature is high. The end of spring and the beginning of winter are the peak seasons for snapping turtles to eat, so they need to be fed twice a day, at 9-10 am and 4-5 pm.
②Raising environment
Turtles of different sizes need to be kept in different pools, not mixed together, because large turtles will affect the growth of small turtles; the water inside the feeding pool needs to be changed regularly, and if the pool is large in size, it must also be disinfected regularly.
③Special care – winter and summer
Although snapping turtles are highly adaptable and are variable temperature animals. Can withstand high and low temperatures. But still have to pay attention to the next. In the summer when the temperature is high, there must be appropriate cooling measures – deepen the pool water (not less than 30 cm), shade cover an area of at least one-fifth of the pool; get some floating duckweed in the pool to keep; can plant some trees next to the pool; need to keep the temperature of the water surface does not exceed 43 ℃.
④Newly bought turtles need an adaptation period
Here I need to remind you that snapping turtles are very intimidating in size, but in fact they are very timid. The snapping turtle you just bought should be placed in a quiet place away from the light so that it can adapt for a while. Let it slowly become familiar with the surrounding environment. Especially note that there should be no vibration, they are very sensitive to vibration. It is very easy to be scared; at first it is not very willing to eat, this situation is very normal, most of the newly bought turtle need a stage to open food, open food must be live, such as small loach, small fish can. If you see it start to open its mouth to eat something that is hanging, this stage of feeding is successful. But if you give raw meat, generally snapping turtles will not eat it!
