Grooming your dog can be a hassle, difficult and very unpleasant, but it can be even worse for you and your dog if you make mistakes without realizing it.

Maybe you want to save money by self-grooming instead of relying on professionals. However, dog groomers are paid for their work – and they know what they’re doing.

However, if you’re willing to learn and put in the effort, you can do a pretty good job of making your dog look less scruffy yourself. If you decide to groom your dog yourself, here are some mistakes you should avoid.

1、No training for your dogdog-grooming-mistakes-2-720x407.jpgIf you want to train your dog without causing anxiety, injury or confusion, you absolutely must train your dog. This means the earlier in life you start, the better.

You should make sure your dog is comfortable being touched on the face, paws, tail and entire body, while also getting used to grooming equipment that may be buzzing or noisy.

They should also get used to other people touching them because you may want to rely on a groomer one day and you don’t want your dog to be scary or pinched.

Even for those dogs that are adopted later in life, it is important to take care of their grooming and tidiness. Create an environment that is as stress-free as possible and give your dog plenty of praise and rewards when it comes to bathing, brushing and furring.

Make it a positive experience and be patient. Your dog may be nervous at first, but stick with it. This will reduce the chances of your dog exhibiting anxious behaviors that will make grooming painful for you and your dog.

2. Not brushing teeth before wet

This is especially important for dogs with long hair, as they can easily get wet. Long hair is also more likely to get tangled in water, which can lead to considerable pain when brushing later.

A quick brush before getting wet will shed dead hair from the coat, which will prevent you from brushing or clipping your dog after a bath.

3、Do not brush your teeth after getting wetdog-grooming-mistakes-3-720x407.jpgIn addition to brushing your teeth before you take a shower, you must also brush your teeth afterwards.

It is easier and more painless if you brush your hair beforehand, and this is important because the bathing process causes more dead hair to be shed. These hairs, if left on the coat, can become tangled with the coat, so remember that brushing is always a “before” and “after” activity.

4、Winter without grooming

Many dog owners worry that if they cut their dog’s hair during the colder months, their pup will get cold. So they continue to not cut their dogs’ hair, but they also neglect their other grooming responsibilities.

This leads to severe mats before the warm season arrives, when the only solution is to shave the fur short, which is the opposite of what the owner wants in the winter. Not to mention, the added fur length doesn’t help the dog stay warm in the winter.

Stick to brushing and bathing, and at least give your dog’s coat a trim. This will help avoid tangled hair while keeping your puppy’s natural coat warm.

You don’t need to shave your dog, but keep their coat.

5. is inconsistentdog-grooming-mistakes-4-720x407.jpgJust because it’s not time for showers, haircuts and grooming doesn’t mean you can give up basic things like brushing your teeth.

Some dog owners don’t plan to give their dog a grooming session at a particular time, or they may go weeks without needing to give their dog a bath or a haircut, but it’s still important to keep up with the grooming campaign so the dog doesn’t forget what it feels like.

Doing so will reduce your stress when you really have to go to a full beauty session.

6、Incomplete

Giving your dog’s back a rub is fairly easy. Unfortunately, many dog owners forget that their dog’s entire body is glued to their back and needs to be groomed.

The hair around the belly, armpits, tail, ears, neck and face also need care, especially because these are areas where pests and parasites like to get infected.

Taking care of these areas on your dog by removing tangles and mats will not only make them look better. It will also help keep them healthy.

7. Not using the correct equipment to cut nails slowly and accuratelydog-grooming-mistakes-5-720x407.jpgTrimming nails can be a challenge for most dog owners, which is one reason why you should get your dog used to having their paws stroked during training.

Don’t cut your nails in a hurry, always use a sharp nail clipper. Replace them regularly. Scissors that are dull will chip rather than cut your nails, and they can slip and cause injury.

Make sure you know how to find the nails quickly. If your dog has light colored nails, you will probably see a pink circle around each nail. If your dog has black nails, then when you cut his nails apart, you will only see a black circle.

Go slowly and don’t cut in a hurry, as that can cause bleeding and pain. If you are not sure how to do it, consult your veterinarian or a professional groomer.

8、Scraping too close

Cutting too close to the skin with clippers can cause razor burn, especially if the blade is dulled or broken. Razor burns can become infected without treatment.

Always make sure your clippers have sharp new blades, as they are less likely to be caught and skipped.

Not only will this protect your dog’s skin, but it will help you cut your dog’s coat more evenly.

9、Shampoo into the eyesdog-grooming-mistakes-6-720x407.jpgThis happens when the dog owner is not careful or moves too fast. Be especially careful when washing the face and hair.

While many modern dog shampoos are designed for safe contact with the eyes, they can still cause discomfort and this irritation can make bath time more stressful.

Take your time, rinse thoroughly, and make sure to avoid or cover your dog’s eyes.

10、Let the dog out after grooming

Many dogs go crazy after a bath, even when they’re completely dry. The first thing they like to do is run around.

Dogs do this for many reasons, but it is important that you get your dog back inside immediately after grooming, unless you want them to go back to being covered in dirt and anywhere they can roll outside. If this happens, you’ll have to start the whole grooming process over again.

Give your dog a little time to work indoors before you let them out.
