Grooming is a very important part of being a dog parent. Not only does grooming make your puppy look good, it is also an important part of keeping them healthy. Nails that grow too long, anal glands that are affected, and bad teeth can lead to pain, discomfort, and sometimes even death.

Brushing your dog’s teeth can prevent a variety of unpleasant health problems not related to your dog’s breathing, such as heart, liver and kidney disease.

Trimming nails will allow your dog to move freely. Long, overgrown nails can be painful for your pup. Plus, trimmed nails are less likely to leave marks on the floor.

Cutting hair that falls into the eyes can prevent eye infections; keeping ear hairs trimmed helps prevent ear infections. Cutting hair and combing hair helps remove dirty mats and dirty braids.

Bathing can prevent dust from getting everywhere in the house and can help control parasites such as fleas.

Here are some basic tools that you will need to groom your dog. You can find them at any pet supply store:

  • Brushes (Talk to the clerk to make sure you pick the right brush for your dog. You may need several brushes.
  • Nail clippers (don’t buy cheap ones, talk to the clerk before you buy good ones. That makes all the difference.)
  • Organic flea prevention shampoo (never buy any product made by Hartz)
  • Dog toothpaste and toothbrush (do not use human toothpaste)
  • Towel

Depending on your dog’s coat, you will need a special type of brush or flea comb, most of which can be purchased at a good pet supply store. Certain flea control products and toothpaste are only available at veterinary clinics. If you’re not sure which tool is best for your dog, talking to your veterinarian will help you get started.
