Sturgeon are found mainly in the lower part of the Jinsha River of the Yangtze River to the estuary of the sea in China, and abroad mainly in the Hankou River of Korea, the Ye River and the western side of Kyushu in Japan. It is one of the oldest surviving vertebrates in origin.

The Chinese sturgeon is included in the list of Class I protected animals in China. It is mainly a carnivorous and narrow-feeding fish, found in natural waters.

What sturgeon eat

Juvenile sturgeon mainly eat small animals such as daphnia, but also shrimp, crabs and clams; adult sturgeon mainly eat benthic fish, mainly crustaceans, water worms, small fish and mollusks. But the sturgeon can also eat some water plants and daphnia and so on. During its reproductive migrations, it stops eating during the spawning period.

In captive conditions, juvenile Chinese sturgeon will start eating when they reach 2.95 to 3.12 cm in length. The feeding content is mainly aquatic shaker larvae, oligochaetes, copepods, branchiopods, etc.; juvenile sturgeon are feeding on aquatic insect larvae and shrimp; adult sturgeon can feed on a variety of forage fish food, such as grass carp, tilapia, silver carp, crucian carp, etc.

Under the research work on the Chinese sturgeon formulated feed, China began the development of a broad source of feed for sturgeon, with various sizes and quality of Chinese sturgeon are able to diet with bait. Starting with the feeding of cultured formulated feeds, it was discovered that, for baby sturgeon, water earthworms – natural bait – are much better than the artificially formulated bait given to raise them; but for juvenile and adult sturgeon, formulated feeds are better than natural bait for development. When raising Chinese sturgeon, attention must be paid to the amount of sturgeon’s main food to be fed.

The main raw materials of sturgeon feed are: puffed soybeans, imported fish oil, imported fish meal, multivitamins, yeast, organic chelated polymineral, fish meal, etc.. All these raw materials will be tested one by one by professional lab technicians when they come into the factory and will be admitted for use only after they are qualified, otherwise they will be rejected.

Although the meat of Chinese sturgeon is delicious, but, after all, it is a valuable species of fish, and very valuable for research, survival age is very long, received national protection. Therefore, if you encounter a wild one, you should not kill it indiscriminately.
